WCSHC Purpose is to help small farmers purchase and sell in bulk with a goal of creating sustainability in rural communities by connecting with USDA and other organizations to provide services in a timely manner.
Winston County Self Help Cooperative celebrated their 3rd Saving Rural America and Youth Conference March 12-13, 2010 in Louisville, Mississippi. The 2010’s conference theme of “Opportunities in Changing Time” drew individuals from Mississippi, Kentucky, Missouri, Louisiana, Alabama, Tennessee, and Virginia. Mississippi ‘s 1862 & 1890 extension programs represented with the following individuals Dr. Greg Bohach, Dr. Joe Street and Dr. Dalton MacAfee engaged with participants and ascertained the needs of rural Americans. Mississippi former Lieutenant Governor Amy Tuck and Louisville Mayor’s Will Hill joined in the conference activities. Mississippi State Conservationist Dr. Homer Wilkes and the Natural Resources Conservation Service represented with a brigade of employees and delivered informative presentations. Mike Sullivan, Mississippi State Director of the Farm Service Agency and staff updated participants on program changes. Kenneth Randle, Business Cooperative Specialist from Rural Development and Mississippi National Agriculture Statistic Service enlightened conference attendants on developments within their agencies. The Mississippi Forestry Commission, extension staff members, NCAT, FSC, MAC and other service providers encouraged participants to use local institutional knowledge to achieve their goals of sustainability in rural communities. Mr. Leonard Jordan, East-NRCS Regional Conservationist served as luncheon speaker. Jordan encouraged individuals to become more involved and learn how incentive programs are implemented. Our agency charge is to help landowners become better managers of their natural resources and we are committed to help save rural America. Winston County Self Help Cooperative extends thanks to each individual for participating in the 2010 conference. We will see you on the highway to help save rural America in 2011 and maintain “the fire in the belly”.
